About Hydroquinone Powder
Hydroquinone is most commonly used as a topical depigmentation or skin lightening agent for treatment of skin conditions such as melasma or post-inflammatory pigmentation (for example, lingering discoloration from acne or psoriasis). Structurally, it is similar to melanin precursors. Therefore, it has the ability to bind/inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for catalyzing melatonin synthesis.
Hydroquinone is regulated by the FDA, as misuse may lead to skin irritation or permanent discoloration, but it is available by prescription. Although hydroquinone has not been shown to exhibit significant toxicity as a topical agent in humans, it is an environmental toxin which may cause oxidative stress and DNA damage in aquatic organisms.
