Maleic Acid, also known as Toxolic Acid, Maleinic Acid, and cis-Butenedioic acid has the chemical formula C4H4O4. It appears as a colorless crystalline solid possessing a characteristic repulsive taste with a faint odor. It is soluble in Water, Acetone, and Ether. It is used as a raw material for the production of various chemicals for the dyeing and finishing of natural fibers. It is prepared by the hydrolysis of Maleic Anhydride.
