Alkalies
Chemical Compounds That Exhibit Alkaline Properties
Alkalies, also known as alkalis, are a group of chemical compounds that exhibit alkaline properties. They are typically hydroxides of alkali metals, which include sodium (NaOH), potassium (KOH), lithium (LiOH), rubidium (RbOH), and cesium (CsOH). These hydroxides are highly soluble in water and produce hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved, which gives them their characteristic alkaline properties.
Alkalies are known for their basic nature and ability to neutralize acids. They have a high pH value and a bitter taste. They can react with acidic substances to form salts and water through a process called neutralization. This property makes them useful in various applications, such as in the manufacturing of soaps, detergents, and cleaning products.
In addition to their industrial applications, alkalies also have uses in laboratory settings, where they are employed in chemical reactions, pH adjustments, and titrations.
