Propanol
Used As An Industrial Cleaner And Solvent
About Propanol
Propanol is a three-carbon alcohol that can take on two isomeric forms with the alcohol (hydroxyl, -OH) group attached on either the first or second carbon atom in the chain. Each has the formula C3H7OH.
Both isomers are clear, colorless liquids at room temperature with a distinct, strong alcohol/solvent odor. Propanol is miscible with water and is flammable. It evaporates quickly and is relatively non-toxic when compared to similar solvents.
Propanol is used as an industrial cleaner and as a solvent. It is used in the manufacture of many industrial and household chemicals. It is found in antiseptics for minor scrapes and cuts, and in disinfectants in the home. In laboratory work it is used to preserve specimens and in DNA extraction.
