Ethanol has the chemical formula C2H6O. Ethanol appears as a clear, colorless, and mobile liquid with a pleasant odor. It is miscible with water, acetone, and ether at ambient conditions. It is prepared from the fermentation of molasses or by hydration of ethylene.

Ethanol 190 proof contains 95% pure ethanol in a balanced quantity of water. A USP grade chemical meets the criteria of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). A substance that has received the USP grade certification can be used in food, drug, or medical applications.
