As with completely denatured alcohol, Specially Denatured Alcohol (SDA) contains additives to make it unfit for consumption, following governmental regulations. Although adding denaturants gives no chemical advantage, denatured alcohol is cheaper because it is not subject to excise taxes. SDA 40-B is one example of an SDA formula that contains tert-butyl alcohol, which is commonly used in cosmetics because studies show that it has low toxicity in topical applications.
