About Oxalic Acid
Oxalic acid, IUPAC name Ethanedioic Acid is a dicarboxylic acid with the formula (CO2H)2
At room temperature the acid is a white, crystalline solid. Oxalic Acid is found naturally in many plants, including green vegetables (such as spinach, collard greens and chives), many fruits, rhubarb, and seeds. It may be found as the acid, or as salts of the acid known as Oxalates.
Oxalic Acid is used as a cleaning agent, especially in the removal of rust where it has the ability to form stable compounds with transition metals such as iron. It is used in dyeing and in bleaching pulpwood for paper and was even used as an early teeth-whitener (no longer used).
It is also used by beekeepers as a pesticide to keep bees healthy and free of mites. Oxalic acid solutions are used in the semi-conductor and electronics industries.
